Spring 2009 Final Project Treatment

Logline: A man is about to hit a boy at a grocery store parking lot as the man parks next to his car.

Treatment: The scene begins with a boy in a car entering the grocery store parking lot. When he parks, he hears a cool song on the radio. He begins to dance and sing in the car. As he gets out of the car, a man nearly bumps into him.

The man’s keys fall out of his pocket. The boy sees the keys drop without the man noticing that it fell.

The man grabs a shopping cart and goes into the grocery store to begin his shopping. At the same time the boys look at each other and smile. Then he gets out of the car take the keys and take the man's car for a spin.

The man gets some chips, cereal, soda, cheese, etc. Meanwhile, the boys exit the parking lot and they go onto the main road. He turns on the radio while driving along the main road.

He then sees a McDonald's. He really wants to go there, but then he knows that he has to take back the car in time. Hesitantly, he goes to McDonald's and he eats there. When he parks in the McDonalds parking lot, he almost hits a pole and at the same time the man almost hits the aisle at the grocery store.

While he's eating, the man at the grocery store is now looking at fruits; he's taking a long time choosing his fruits, because he can't find the right one. He then sees apples; slowly he begins to put apples into a bag to weigh. But then he doesn’t know where to weigh his apples. He asks an employee and then he tells where it is.

When he's done eating, he goes back in the car and on the main road. While he continues driving again, he begins to start pressing buttons in the car. He looks through the dashboard and he sees the registration and his glasses. He puts on the glasses and imitates the man who he bumped into.

The man then has finished getting all his grocery; when he goes to pay, the price for the apples are wrong; it's supposed to be $0.99 per lb, but it shows as $1.99 per lb. So then the cashier calls someone and then they go check the price. The cashier then changes the price.

The boy then looks at the time and he notices he's been in the car for almost 45 minutes, so he turns back towards the grocery store. He then enters the parking lot of the grocery store and they park it. He sees the man exiting the grocery store. The boy rapidly go back in his car and exit the parking lot. Then as he exits the parking lot, he can’t find his wallet.

After the man is done loading his grocery, he goes into the car and then sees a wallet in the driver's seat, and just as he's about to open the wallet, the scene ends.

Final Project- Short Film Treatment

Logline: A boy gets a referral from the dean, for fighting with his teacher and then begins to hate the admin of the school.

Treatment: It all starts out in a classroom of 10-15 students. The teacher begins talking about the upcoming election for president. The way the teacher begins to talk sounds like s/he is favor for Obama and the boy is in favor of McCain, and he really has very strong opinions about him. The boy gradually becomes angry and right when the teacher says something about Obama that offends him, he stands up and starts throwing a tantrum. The boy next to him who is in favor of Obama has a mean face at the boy throughout the rebuttle. His face looks like he's going to do something bad. He argues and says why McCain is the best candidate for president. Then they have a rebuttle; teacher sends the boy to the dean. The dean writes a referral to the boy and then begins to argue with the dean. Then the dean concludes that students arent supposed to fight with their teachers under the policy. As the dean and the boy talk, the pro Obama boy asks the teacher if he can go to the bathroom. The boy walks out of the deans office really upset; he punches the wall. Then the pro Obama boy goes to the boy who is upset and then he starts debating with him about why Obama is the best. The boy gets so angry; that he pushes him to the floor and kills him with a pen.

Slumdog Millionaire Genre and Audience

The genre of Slumdog Millionare is Drama/Thriller and Comedy. The features of determining the genre are the three events that are happening at the same time: Jamal being interrogated, his past, and him on the show. Slumdog Millionaire is connected to the novel Q and A by Vikas Swarup.
The director of the film was Danny Boyle(from the UK), and Co-Director was Loveleen Tandan(from India). Danny Boyle wanted to show how an underdog can rise up, and society not allowing them to succeed in life. Danny Boyle before wanted it to be a British film, but then he had a hard time casting and getting some of the Indian things/traditions incorporated in the film. So then he got Loveleen Tandan as a Co- Director to help with those needs. Boyle mostly likes to have films with kids in it, because he loves getting kids involved.
Boyle's themes mostly incorporate the theme of hope and in Slumdog Millionaire, Jamal had hope of finding Latika. Intercutting played a great factor in the film. He likes to have alot of scenes handheld rather than on a tripod or dolly track so it looks more cinematic and realistic. The background music and the vivid scenes of Mumbai was a great way to show where Jamal originated from. The theme of the film is optimism. Initially the target audience was the UK; as production of this film became more known, the target audience was the US. The US audience was really fascinated by the film as it won 8 Golden Globe Awards.

Innercutting Treatment- Animal Cracker Quest

Log Line: Two boys crave animal crackers from a vending machine that has one left.

Treatment: Boy#1 is sitting in class and we hear his stomach growl. He spots the teacher eating animal crackers and immediately craves some.

Same situation with another boy#2 who is also craving animal crackers.


We cut back to the vending machine that has only one last bag of animal crackers.

They both end up staring at each other and then looking at the snack.

The first boy looks anxiously at the clock.

Now the other boy looks at his cell phone watch. As soon as the bell rings they both make a run for the animal crackers. The second boy, coming from the same class, tries racing him there and after a few cuts between them the first boy wins.

They both take different directions there hoping for reaching there first.

This boy who is very excited pulls out a crisp dollar puts it in with a big smile on his face. The other boy is shown behind him angry. Then he presses A1 but machine doesn't work. His smile fades away as the boy sees (POV) a "Broken Machine" sign. The second boy laughs.
